Modern technique is rooted in methods such as Graham, Limon, and Horton. Contemporary combines multiple techniques, while Interpretive Modern uses movement to convey a story, feeling, or emotional state.

Age groups
Dance is grouped by age, not by level.
Age groups
- 6 and under
- 8 and under
- 10 and under
- 12 and under
- 14 and under
- 15 years
- 16 and over
Age is set as of December 31, 2026. For duets, trios, and groups the ages of all dancers are averaged.
Group sizes
- Small, 4 to 8 dancers
- Large, 9 to 15 dancers
- Extra large, 16 or more dancers
