Seven classical styles, from Demi-Pointe through Improvisation.
Classical music with lyrics may be used in Ballet at the Vernon festival. Note that BC Provincials does not allow lyrics, so a dancer planning to go on should choose accordingly.
Styles
The styles in Ballet.
- Demi-Pointe ClassicalSoft ballet shoes. One hand-held prop permitted.
- Pointe ClassicalPointe shoes. One hand-held prop permitted.
- Contemporary BalletClassical technique with a greater range of movement, including floor work.
- Interpretive BalletExpresses an idea rather than telling a story. No sets or props.
- Demi-CharacterBallet technique from the waist down, character from the waist up.
- National CharacterFolk or choreographed dance in the traditional style of a country.
- ImprovisationSoloists of all ages receive a 10-second preview, then improvise for one minute.
Age groups
Dance is grouped by age, not by level.
Age groups
- 6 and under
- 8 and under
- 10 and under
- 12 and under
- 14 and under
- 15 years
- 16 and over
Age is set as of December 31, 2026. For duets, trios, and groups the ages of all dancers are averaged.
Group sizes
- Small, 4 to 8 dancers
- Large, 9 to 15 dancers
- Extra large, 16 or more dancers
